Once in the 80's, in the age of wordstar, lotus123, and the new weird magic Cubecalc (real 3D sheets, you selected view direction and layer), and seeing the limited macro languages available, I thought "What if you could program your word processor….?"
And then in the next decade, along came VBA, allegedly starting with Outlook.
VBA allows you to grasp the Office program's object model so you can remote control formatting of text and make reports in Word. Not just reports in A Proprietary Report File Format, but real Word reports.
I use those object models in Word and Excel extensively. From Delphi and now C#. Even from Powershell! They are partly undocumented, behaviour changed with Office versions, sometimes I have to make my own tweaks such as moving a line before and after printing bc in Print Preview a print margin unexpectedly swells.

We maybe don't need the Basic language.
But we sure need to access those object models so we can continue make our Time Saving Pixel Perfect Office Magic…

Will Microsoft open script to Personal/Home version? When I dig deeper into Power Query, I like the language very much, which is just more elegant then VBA.

you can have your Excel vba in one Excel Workbook (.xlsm) and Run it from another Excel Workbook. You can run VBA in any Workbook as long as the one with the script is open. Macros/Script can be shared across different Workbooks, I do this all the time. I don't know how this fits into all this, just sharing, lol

Thanks Leila. I just came across and subscribed to your channel and am really enjoying the videos. Your pacing and presentation are excellent. I've been coding VBA, ADO, Automation between Office and non-Office software (e.g. controlling MapBasic and SPSS Syntax from VBA) plus web development for >15 years and the most important thing I've learnt is that you never stop learning. Greetings from the UK.

We have to accept changes & 10 years is more than enough time to learn this script language.

7:05 TypeScript is a superset of Javascript, not a subset 😉 Strictly speaking, it is a strict superset of ECMAScript 2015, which in turn is a superset of ECMAScript 5, which closest to what people call "Javascript".

There could be a discussion about if it even is a superset, because some JS code will not run in TS, but that is not because the syntax is invalid, but because TS enforces types.

I am really looking forward to Office Script being implemented on the Desktop <3 Thank you for the great synopsis, I think your estimate with 2031 is right 😉

Until OfficeScripts have a COM API and FFI, they're useless to me unfortunately. Without these 2 features we can't access most of the powerful tools on windows, and until everything is migrated to the cloud AND has good APIs, this will continue to be a gap in office scripts.
Finally twinBASIC can run VBA. So the language is going nowhere as a whole.

I start getting lost between VBA, Office Scripts, and PowerQuery. I sort of understand what VBA can do that others can't but I can't help but to second think if it's better to use Scripts instead of PQ.

6:35 everything is so much easier if you litter pointless comments all over your entire code base. Also why ts WHY, there are so many nice languages out there… (I do get why that's the obvious choice for a web app still I weep for humanity)

javascript is used for 2 things, client side browser and other is nodejs server side.
All you done can be done in vba added/changed code to a macro.
You talk about VBA is complex, it is not, it is simple, Replace DAO, ADO with what?
It is not correct that excel cannot interact with web, we can use webservice hyperlink to obtain complex results outside EXCEL or without hyperlink we can obtain results directly in cell results, we can do do XMLHttprequests inside VBA.
I build an application quick on Acces VBA no matter complexity it take 3 days max.
Then i build in excel / spreadsheet DDL statement for mysql.
I convert all vba in VBA, syntax sql have echiv in MYSQL, then it take another few days to write php and debug code.
I migrate data using ODBC MYSQL.
At end i have a full native LINUX application that can run for 50 years with no restart on server.

If the script can be executed from the Power Automate, then it could be possible to refresh power query using office script without opening the excel workbook itself? If yes, then you can use my post as an idea for your next video ;-). Thank You

it is a shame, it's similar to Google App Scripts. Microsoft is going down! They copied!

I've been using VBA since Access 2.0 (Clipper 5.0 before that) & excel 95. I don't even like the term "macro". There are subroutines and functions. At 64, I got hired just to help out with their vba coding. I love writing vba code for projects. I'll make up a project if I run out of them. Sounds crazy but mastering a challenging project gives me great fulfillment. After that, you're just a user. (no fun in that)

Web scraping in VBA uses the obsolete Internet Explorer. Many banks are phasing out it use entirely. Where do we turn?
